Anthony Benezet, an 18th century Philadelphia Quaker, was a key figure in putting a stop to the Atlantic slave trade. It was Benezet, too, who precipitated America’s long national discussion of black and white equality, an unthinkable concept in his day. “Who,” wrote French revolutionary Jacques Pierre Brissot, “was more virtuous than Benezet? Who was more useful to society, to mankind?” David Chanoff’s book talk will explore the life of this too little known Quaker who helped transform America’s thinking about race. David Chanoff attends FMC and has published 26 books.
