15TH ANNUAL ALL-MEETING MEETING FOR WORSHIP OUTSIDE RAYTHEON (In Person, Off-Site / Open Zoom)
To live out our peace testimony and support those for whom this is a monthly ministry, Friends Meeting at Cambridge in-person worship will be held at Raytheon on October 20. Raytheon is located at 10 Moulton Street in Cambridge (at Concord Ave opposite Neville Manor). This is about 5 minutes away from Longfellow Park by car. Raytheon is the country‘s largest producer of guided missiles, and designs and develops nuclear weapons. Friends are encouraged to join us for worship outside Raytheon to bring attention to these atrocities. Carpools will leave from Longfellow Park after Forum until about 10:35.
Families are encouraged to come to Raytheon. There will be a space and a program for children. There will be no First Day School or childcare at 5 Longfellow Park after the end of Forum.
Some chairs will be brought from FMC, but it is helpful for Friends to bring their own chairs. Warm clothing is always a good idea on cold and/or windy days. Hats and sunscreen provide protection from the sun on both sunny and overcast days. Bring a raincoat and/or umbrella if rain is in the forecast. Masks are optional.
Those who cannot or choose not to go to Raytheon may join and support us by worshiping on Open Zoom, with a hybrid connection. To participate using Open Zoom, click the button below or provide the Meeting ID: 783 475 1861 and Passcode: 1652 (if requested) on Zoom.com, the Zoom app, or after calling # 1-646-558-8656 .
On Sunday, October 20th…
- There will be fellowship and simple refreshments (weather permitting) at the rise of meeting for worship at Raytheon.
- Afterthoughts will be held on the regular Afterthoughts Zoom link from 12:00-12:30 pm but not on-site at 5 Longfellow Park.
- All are invited to the second event in the Adult Spiritual Education Fall Series on Open Zoom from 7:00-8:30 pm.
This is a chance to act together as a loving and joyful community to bring our testimonies out into the world. Contact Care of Worship Volunteers about announcements for this day at careofworship@fmcquaker.org
And now for a bit of historical information…
This witness started when Friends saw a 2009 Boston Globe headline reporting cluster bombs were produced by a firm headquartered in the Boston area. We learned about the horrors done by cluster bombs – each one leaves multiple explosive bomblets on the ground to be detonated by unfortunate passersby (including children). Feeling outrage about this technology being produced by a company headquartered in our community (Wilmington, MA), FMC felt called to witness to our Peace Testimony. Rather than another demonstration or protest, the Meeting decided on holding a Meeting for Worship at the company site (Textron).
We first met there in October 2009, and we met there on the third Sunday of almost every month until Textron decided to stop producing cluster bombs – we hope at least partially due to our efforts and those of others. We then moved our monthly witness to the Cambridge office of Raytheon.
