Harry Lewis Gracey Memorial Meeting for Worship (Meetinghouse)
Long-time FMC member Dr. Harry Lewis Gracey died on April 19, 2024, one day after his 91st birthday.
A Memorial Meeting for Worship to celebrate the life of Harry Gracey will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 2:00 pm in the Meetinghouse with a reception following in the Friends Room.
Harry Gracey joined FMC in 1989. Born in Swarthmore, PA on April 18, 1933, he grew up attending Swarthmore Meeting and was a life-long Friend. A psychologist, researcher and author, his most notable book Curriculum of Craftsmanship was published by The University of Chicago Press in 1972. After an intensive two-year study of an elementary school on the East Coast, he concluded that the bureaucratic structure of teaching to the curriculum stifled the teachers and trained the children to be good citizens of a bureaucratic society.
Dr. Gracey and his wife MaryBelle Fisher, also a psychologist, established a practice together in the 1980s. They traveled widely and often attended Friends meetings they found in their travels.
