The New Story Group (Zoom)
The FMC New Story meets on Zoom from 7:00 to 9:00pm on the fourth Monday of the month. Come at 6:30 for fellowship. First timers are always welcome!
Topic for August: “From Noosphere to Knowsphere” with Michael Mallary. Mike, who comes from Worcester Friends Meeting, is the author of Our Improbable Universe.
“A major difference in my approach is that though complex language gave a huge boost to the human Noosphere, it does not define it. What I consider to be the Knowsphere (using a different noun in part to flag that mine is a significantly different point of view) and what most thinkers view it to be. A big difference is that I would include many more forms of communication than language as being a link to the collectivity of mind that is the Noosphere. It is one of the reasons that I have a chapter entitled “Elephant Spirit” followed by “Human Spirit”. In both cases much of the Ongoingness of who a human or an elephant is in a psychological sense is based on communication of being between individuals. Our communications are much more dominated by vocalizations whereas the elephant relies more on the other senses (sight, smell, touch etc) in addition to its vocalizations (some of which we cannot hear because the frequency is too low for us). One of the problems with language is that our verbal descriptions of reality are often a poor representation of it. When your main tool is a hammer, you see things as nails.”
