The purpose of the New Story retreat is two-fold: to set a theme for the coming year and to inspire contributions on the theme.

  • We share an aspiration to bring the New Story more fully into our spiritual lives and what we do in the world as part of reinventing the human at the species level.
  • The New Story group is not only a source of information we are also a community supportive to each other.
  • We aim to make explicit what it looks like when we’re supporting each other in living the New Story.
  • A key to supporting each other is offering programs that invite living the New Story.

Our proposed theme for the coming year is the quote from Thomas Berry on reinventing the human:

“The historical mission of our times is
to reinvent the human at the species level,
with critical reflection,
within the community of life-systems,
in a time-developmental context,
by means of story and shared dream experience.”

This sentence is explained in Chapter 14 “Reinventing the Human” of The Great Work by Thomas Berry, 4 pages, which I hope you can read before the meeting.  We will discuss the sentence in the first part of our meeting.

In the second half of our meeting on Saturday we will see if the above quote has life for us in planning the upcoming meetings of the New Story group. Are there 1-2 topics or queries for an evening’s program which you could explore and possibly lead? Are there 1-2 other people with whom you might collaborate?
